I often get asked what books or resources I’d recommend to learn more about tabletop game design.
Here are a few that I’ve found extremely helpful:
Building Blocks of Tabletop Game Design: An Encyclopedia of Mechanisms, 2nd Edition by Geoff Engelstein and Isaac Shalev.
Thematic Integration in Board Game Design by Sarah Shipp
Storytelling in the Modern Board Game by Marco Arnaudo
The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Third Edition by Jesse Schell.
In addition, here are some I don’t currently own, but look forward to reading:
Graphic Design for Board Games by Daniel Solis
Mathematics of Tabletop Games by Aaron Montomery
I’d also recommend recommend the I want to make a board game! post, which includes a mix of books and media to check out.
If you have any tabletop game design books that you think I should review and/or belong on this this, email me at games@exeunt.press!
