Little late to the party, but great article! One thing I didn't see mentioned that I really wish designers would keep in mind is that your body copy (as opposed to display or header fonts) should be legible and enjoyable to read FIRST.

I can't tell you how many times I've started reading a book and the typeface chosen for the body copy or the tables or whatever makes reading it an actual chore.

Absolutely agree. Finding a good, legible, readable font for the majority of text is important.

This is fantastic! Thank you for writing this up. I leaned a lot about fonts, and some things I'm doing wrong (and right) in choosing and using fonts in my own projects. 😅💖

Aloraglyphs is actually pretty readable if you have a Braille alphabet card handy. It starts to do its own thing once you leave the letters, and you’ll notice many of the symbol characters duplicate letter characters, like ? and N, but it’s pretty easy reading for the core text!

I had no idea it was based on Braille! Thanks for pointing that out!

Great article! Some favourites of mine: Kern Club has some really great display typefaces with a retro feel, and Atipo Foundry has some great serif and sans serif. Both offer very affordable commercial licenses and even have a few free goodies.
