Nice write-up! I would point out that you already have a game with a mid-game trigger: Eleventh Beast! Not until the player rolls a location that already has a Rumor Token does the Beast actually enter the game. There, though, the player is racing around the map to ward off the second phase of the game, as opposed to most games (I'd expect) where the player wants to trigger the second phase to get closer to finishing and winning.
Hah, I guess you are right! Not sure why I hadn't considered Eleventh Beast to have a mid-game trigger mechanism but it really does. I think I was hung up on games where there is a massive shift like the Big Trouble in Little China board game (which is great btw).
I had this game when I was a kid and really enjoyed it for a while. Was so different from most other games - and played solo. Between this and my Merlin electronic game - fun times!
Wonderful to see how there was so much done with so little technology. Nowadays you are one update away from having a slow phone.
That change in the middle was something I was looking into for my one page game, as when the character is almost reaching the end of the date, things get dangerous as the date (a supervillian) gets enthusiastic so she might kill you by mistake
Yeah, a lot of people's games still work. Mine did for years, but eventually the one board in it corrodes and fails. If I tore it apart (with special screwdriver) I could repair it, but that online version reduces the motivation to do it.
Also... Mid-game triggers are fun! The bigger the better!
Thanks to Wyrd Science Magazine for pointing out that you can play this game online: https://dndlabyrinth.com/
