I'm a big fan of MDA and Marc's 8 Kinds of FUN.

In my game design classes, I also teach about Nicole Lazzaro's 4 Keys to FUN...

https://www.nicolelazzaro.com/the4-keys-to-fun/

and Mattel's 10 Kinds of FUN...

I’m not familiar with those! I’ll check them both out. Teaching the kinds of fun has been a big hit in the classes I’ve done.

Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks for sharing the Mattel vid, that’s one that I hadn’t come across in my research. I’ve compiled a list of 25 forms of fun and started documenting my thoughts about them here, in case you’re interested for your game design course. I’m about to start teaching a game design course too! Wish me luck. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BPkG7ZL2hrKz6Lhej9ZFmVolsYVPzIKsd4DuepazWwg/edit?usp=drivesdk

Interesting to see that you’ve also been thinking about this. I’ve done a lot of thinking about forms of fun over the past few years and have started to document my thoughts in this document- 25 Forms of Fun- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BPkG7ZL2hrKz6Lhej9ZFmVolsYVPzIKsd4DuepazWwg/edit?usp=drivesdk

Maybe it will inspire you to write a follow up post. Big fan of your blog here! Carl

This is also an interesting way to think of session planning for a run of the mill TTRPG night. Thanks for sharing, great food for thought

This really reminds me of the Return of the Lazy DM by Sly Flourish, as well as his Lazy DM newsletter. I’m always inspired by ideas for bringing focus to the experience at the table, rather than only thinking of world building or challenge ratings etc. “What makes my games fun?” is such a great question!
