Titan is another Avalon Hill game that includes arena combat. It has gone through multiple editions , including one recently from Valley Games. The people at my game club played it obsessively for years, so there must be something to it. And it also has at least one cover of The General devoted to it.

Thanks for all your insights into game design, by the way!

Thanks!

I happen to have a copy of Titan (1982 Avalon Hill edition) on my shelf! It'll probably show up on Skeleton Code Machine eventually. I have good memories of that game!

How kind of you to reply so quickly! I'm glad that you have the game. IDK if you have time for the research, but it might be fun to compare the 1982 edition to the Valley Games edition, and then talk about sequels or reprints or whatever from the point of view of game design.

I remember this game, and still have my copy that I got used in the 1990s. Much fun was had fighting battles against my younger brother's gladiators. We found the system a bit clunky, but overall the game is fun. As a teenager I tried coming up with variant rules for different fantasy races (elves, dwarves, trolls, etc.) but I don't remember coming up with anything I found satisfactory.

Yeah, I think the game has "good bones" or a core concept. By modern standards it seems to suffer from the overly wordy rules and some fiddly mechanisms. There are, of course, many other gladiatorial games to choose from these days but this one has some interesting things in it. Would have loved it as teenager I bet!!

I loved Gladiator and in high school we ran a campaign / league, growing our stables and bearing witness to the eventual triumph of Conan the Librarian. Good times and great memories!
